I grew up in a nice house, it probably isn’t a masterpiece. But it has a terrace.
It faces the trees that have grown beside the neighboring river. And the light hits it beautifully. It’s not very big, it fits a small table and a potted tree, as if somehow nature has found its way into the terrace, or perhaps the terrace found its way into nature, it’s hard to tell…
It was the most used space in the home by far. Just thinking about it makes me feel good, it makes me feel at ease.
In honest design, nothing is pretending to be anything other than what it is. The poured concrete shows the imperfections of its formwork, the floor’s polished concrete reflects the use of the space, the pine wood worms up the inside and brings the outside within. There is no need to cover anything up, there’s nothing to hide.
The lighting is designed in such a way that the source is never seen. It only bounces indirectly on the materials, creating soothing atmospheres that honor the materials. This creates presence of space.
It’s not necessary to use many materials or many types of light to create great design. Beauty is in simplicity.
