More than three million homes are required in London for people in search of suitable accommodation, a number that will only continue to grow. As the need for housing stock increases, the question fundamentally becomes; How and where to build projects that meet the demand?
At first glance, its more or less clear that a large, flexible and modular mega-structure from the likes of Yona Friedman or Constant’s New Babylon is needed to contain this considerable number of living units, with the possibility of future growth and adaptation throughout the city of London. However, it is important that somehow these mega-structures maintain a relationship with the surroundings and the more traditional cityscape that people love and care for. In other words, seeking to create individuality within the pattern.
By creating simple and articulated structural elements, based on standardized dimensions, a grid of 9.6 x 9.6 meters determines the structural proportion for the project. The grid is then superposed over the urban fabric to begin de intervention. Once access points are established, modules are staked vertically to create structural masts that also serve as mechanical and vertical circulation. The grid is then transported 12 stories above the ground to create a cloud of habitable space. Finally, an organic entity disrupts the grid creating plazas, parks and promenades that connect the towers and allow horizontal circulation throughout the project. The module’s multiple levels allow for diverse programs and typologies that create a true mixed use that varies from homes to shops, restaurants, markets and more…
By obtaining air rights and with strategic planning, the project needs minimal site intervention due to the fact that most of it is above the cityscape. However, once inside, a familiar scenery of homes and shops makes for a more traditional European town-like experience, and provides a more human approach that allows people to forget momentarily they’re in an enormous “floating” mega-structure above the great city of London.
